Documents...Truthful?

I have something to say on this. I do not think all documents are truthful. This goes with photos, music, videos, any type of document really.  It is very hard to be objective if you are gaining some kind of exposure or power from what you are putting out. You can gain bragging rights, tenure, research, power, stature, ect. These things will skew the type of spin or filter one will write with.

I know American history textbooks are very different from European ones. They almost always have a different story or viewpoint on the same war. News sources are not always truthful. American news skews what is going on in the Middle East tremendously compared to the sources, both people on both sides as well as news, from the region.

I think math and science are about the only objective type of documents out there. They can be tested and verified and scrutinized and there MUST be a consensus or else the value of the idea is lessened.

IMPROV!

Interview 1:
My INTERvIeW! It was FuN! I almost started crying though...we talked about my church alot!

Interview 2:

Do you think you would do better if you didnt procrastinate?
Is it considered procrastinating if you plan it out?
Have you ever missed anything? If so what was your craziest excuse?

Interview 3:

Do you think love at first sight is for everyone??

Learning in Coversations v. Books

I have a perfect example for this exercise. My boyfriend, God Bless him, is a human encycolopedia / history book. It is amazing how he soaks up information read like a sponge. I know he is very knowledgable and credible becuase he compiles his information from many sources before he finalizes his ideas.

For example, my boyfriend was telling me about Ivan the Impaler, which happens to be the inspiration for Dracula. He told me in the view point of history rather than the view point of a comic. He said he was one of the few men that was able to stop the Turks as they invaded many countries in their history. He said Ivan would punish the entire Turkish army by impaling their bodies from bottom through throat through a pike in the ground. He showed me pictures on the internet of hundreds of men spiked in a field and Ivan standing in the background.

I was so interested the way he told the story, adding emotion and feeling to parts that a book would otherwise not be able to do. The intonation and excitement in his voice as he realized I was unfamiliar with this topic vastly improved my enjoyment of learning. I was so encourged by his excitement that I took it upon myself to tell the story to my slavic girlfriends and even do some extra research.

If i read this story in a book, i would just think, "oh wow, thats crazy. I am going to continue reading the next chapter of this dry history book." Little emotion is presented and I simply do not get excited about information when a book tells me.

Response to 2nd Viewing

So we just had our second viewing of our manifesto videos. For some reason, I was ligitimately nervouse, as in, i was not proud of my work, so I really did not want to show it. I was scared becuse this video is very different from what I usually make (sequential clips). At the last day I found the song to overlap the clips that really brought it together, so that was my saving grace.

Luckily,  the class loved the song overlay. they said it really held the video together well. I am not sure on how well I will take this critique for the next video i make. I am really into (as aforementioned) natural sounds. I wanted to take a leap with this and it worked out.

I did not get the response I anticipated. I feel like the class was really lethargic and droll (myself very much included) for the first half of the class. I dont think many people got many responses that they were looking for, a lot was the obvious. I wish I got more about what they did not like or what their first impressions were.

I think I will stick to sequential or more coherent after listening to the comments today in class. they were positive comments, but i feel i would have gotten  a more definitive response from people if I stuck to my natural style.

i think i spend too much time about the clips and how they fit together rather than the effects and using music and sound. I challange myself next video to really work on the effects and sound clips. I want to use a camera that actually captures good, quality images, i want to take it to the next level.

For somereason I had my foot in my mouth today as I presented. I think it had to do with the lack of confidence I had in my project (again that was due to the different technique I used, not cuz I felt like I did a crappy job and was too lazy to fix it). next time I present, I think I am just going to take it for what it is,  and just share with people what I have been working on for the past couple of weeks.

Here's to the next assignment and its challanges and improvements!

Motiff Film Inspiration Write Up

i liked this assignment. as usual i had no idea how to begin it. but in class one day, i looked out the window and saw a really cool and fresh scene. the wind was blowing and it was raining slightly, and there was a bush that had the raindrops and wind on it.

I decided initially to go with the fresh and clean feeling for my video motiff. I had some really great ideas and shot ideas, but the feasibility of shooting them when it came down to the crunch time was not possible.

I switched my idea to something that I still liked: the movement and actions of people in their everyday life. I took the camera around my house and filmed my many roomates doing things that I just caught them in the act of when I barged into their rooms. It was great. Little things like spraying cologne or picking up her keys, or turning on a light switch. I found this really music to go with it, but the whole thing overpowered the small minute sounds that made the video what it was. As i spoke with my last viewing, it is the little sounds that mean so much to me. I could have a bunch of songs that correlate perfectly, but in the end, i chose a chaotic instrumental entitled "Fantastic Instrumental" on Youtube. It meshed well with the whole video and it completed the idea!

I would like to ask the audience what their initial thoughts of the video are. After a couple days of not seeing my video, i noticed, if the viewer didnt have the background of the video first, it could look pretty random to them. I dont really have a problem with this description, because natural actions of everyday life are in fact random. I still want to cater to the audience and, like in my manifesto, I want to clearly communicate what is in my mind onto the film!

Enjoy!

Krannert Museam Feildtrip

I LOVED Jean Luc Maylane's work.

There were about 20 or so over sized still life pictures of rural Texas. each had a picture of a bird in them. I LOVED how the pictures were so large. it made me feel like i was in them or even a spec on the dirt and hay ridden ground, looking for the bird with the Jean Luc. The glossiness of the pictures drew me to them. it was a vast space of these picture which added to the feeling that i was in the work itself. Once i located the birds in each of the pictures, i felt the fluffy little bird in my hand. It was so real and so right there. I just wanted to grab the bird right out of the picture and plop it into my had! one of the pictures had a bird staring with its head cocked sideways at the camera. It was as if to say, are you taking a picture of me? the reality of the pictures are something i want to bring to my work. i want the audience and myself to feel the image, feel the wind, the object, smell the environment, fear and love what the picture is fearing and loving.

I REALLY REALLY DISLIKED Andy Warhol's portraits of Ina Ginsburg and Mr. Shapiro.

Plain and simple, who wants to see upper-middle class staring at a camera (and i mean i could feel the people just staring as if the say "okay i am ready for you to take my picture now Andy!"). They were regular people in very regular posing, with bad acting, and mediocre almost lost facial expressions. I want to see a picture and have in invoke something in me, not devoke, which is exactly what these pictures did to me. In one word i describe these pictures: blazay.

Modern Art

well, i dont think i have seen much modern art to be honest with you. the most eye opening experience was the performance that we were assigned to go to for this class: White Out. I blogged about it earlier. i have also seen some at the The Chicago Art Institute.

to be honest, i didnt get it. i thought some of it was cool. the dancing i was more ready to open up to because i used to dance and have had some friends who have been in modern classes. however the art baffles me sometimes. once i saw a stack of papers in the Art Institute. I didnt know if they were brochures to take and I almost grabbed at it. then i saw a pile of sand. i mean maybe if there is some kind of preface or something to explain (which would defeat the purpose in some ways) i would get it.

definitions of contemporary art? well i think odd, weird, different. i dont think traditional or historical. i think random objects, chaos, hodgepodge.

i think i need to be more open minded about modern art. i always seem to have a closed mind because i am very accustomed to traditional art.

art is the expression of oneself. so to say anything is good or bad is hard. it is more just like a different view on art.

Visual Inspiration

Scratching

what inspires me....clean and odd inspires me. not the odd that is scary but the odd that is eye-catching. twyla tharp is my new favorite author. i mean the way she describes things is phenomenal. the words and ideas, notions that i have trouble defining or even attest that there is no formal definition to, tharp just goes and writes about it and knocks it on the head.

scratching is totally what i do. for example, as this blog can tell, when i walk into the store anthropologie i see. I just see.

I see things that are clean, bright, odd, inspiring, new, fresh. i see things things and begin to scratch. i dig in the store, i read a page of a book, i look closely at the ascessories and the bedspreads. then i take and think. i look and rummage. it comes to me then. a cleaner version of a hodgpodge of ideas. its a beautiful process and scratching in itslef inspires me. it is my creative food.

my role models are two people....
my brother. my brother is amazing in that he sets his mind to something and accomplishes it. he went to u of i and decided after 4 years of working around the states with GE, he wanted to go to one of the best schools to get his MBA. he studied his butt of and got into the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business. He graduated from there and decided to work in a field that without prior experience (which he didnt have at the time), he is now working for.

eleni:
i lived with this girl my freshman year and she is a very unique person. she is bubbly, charismatic, intelligent, and most of all fun to be around. she is moral, grounded and warm. everyone she comes into contact to  remembers her and is drawn to her!

"Journeys"

three motifs in "Journeys":

1. hardships
2. immensity of people
3. poverty

(Overall theme/motif: being trapped, no space)
secondary motif:
1. closeness

i thought "Joureys" was a very different film. it showed the hardships of the sheer poverty prevalent in Mumbai. It is quite amazing the lack of space each person has to him/herself. whether on the train, walking, sleeping, driving...there are hundreds of people surrounding you, enclosing you in a small box of little space. The poverty sucks the life out of people, it sucks the space out of where they can travel, what they can achieve, where they can go and things they can do. Hardships overlie these themes. The immensity of people and lack of space makes living hard, dreary, poor. Trying to get by trapped in a little space is a hardship in its very own.

Man With The Movie Camera

i thought this film was very provactive for its time period. some motifs i noticed were
1. from the eyes of a filmmaker
2. natural ongoings of the time period
3. quick movements

i thought it was very cool to see how a filmmaker moves and goes about capturing his footage. all to often i think of the final outcome, the film itself, but i think the cooler, more mysterious aspect of filmmaking lays behind the final outcome. this motif adheres to his manifesto of "From the Diary of A Cameraman."

i thought the natural ongoings of life at the time (1929) was brilliant. there was no real set, no actors, no scripts. the film just captured what the time period brought to the camera, without fuss or practice. this natural or on the flip side, industrial, activity that the man captured became its on set with its own actors and its own scripts.

the quick splices and random movements and bouncing from one idea from the next produces a lack of scenario. the viewer has no real time to get attached to one particular set of images, rather the attachment comes to the overall film itself. I loved the use of splices, which was probably very innovative at the time.

some smaller motifs were the use of people. i loved how he connected cold hard machinery to warm and moving people. the shots with the cigarette factory and the women connecting phone calls were great. the work and actions of the people moved the machinery, combining them into one.

Hi. My name is Eve and I am a Junior in Accountancy at the University of Illinois College of Business. I am currently in love with accounting and just want to make sure I keep my artsy self alive as I learn about debits and credits and journal entries. I plan on completing my undergraduate degree in May 2010 then stay for the MAS program and graduate in May 2011 with my MAS and take my CPA in the summer of 2011. I then plan on going to work for a large public accounting firm. After I work there for 5 or so years, I will see were life takes me. If that is staying at the firm in accounting or starting my own children's art school...only time will tell. I have an amazing amazing boyfriend who swept me off my feet my Sophomore year in college. Little was I expecting Prince Charming, Mr. White Night to come save me for the lonley abiss of finding the right guy amongst a lot of...well girls I am sure your know the pickings :P

Noun, Verb, Adjective

For me, this project was divided into three distinct phases:

sheer fear: i was petrified I could not come up with the most brilliant piece of video, that was witty, eye catching, fun, and intereting. I was scared to dissapoint myself. Mostly, to be quite honest, I was scared I didnt understand the concept of the project. It was hilarious because I found that every study took the assignment in a different way. Some people went very abstract, some went very literal. Some went right in the middle. I had nothing to fear. But I did!

sheer creativity/productiveness: this was great, this step! i swear, i just sat down on my laptop and starting playing with iMovie. Soon enough, i just began. Just began, just like that. Ideas popped into my head. They werent the wittiest, or most thought provoking, but they were decent ideas, ideas that were mine. I had such a fun time in this stage. I recorded ideas, you could hear me hollering and hooting, laughing and screaming cuz I couldnt beleive i had actual material to work with.

sheer class time: I loved getting my work critiqued and showing and sharing my videos with the class. I wasnt scared because i was proud of my work, becuase it was MINE, something new for me. I liked watching others videos becaseu it showed me that fear is not really needed, and you know its okay to be scared but i can hammer some good solid stuff out!

Manifesto

Performance Response

I thought the performance on Thursday night was eye-opening. I have never seen a type of dance like that. I danced for 8 years and I took classes including lyrical and modern, but this type of movement was very different. I didn’t like it at first, especially the first scene in the beginning. I didn’t get the concept of the people and why there was a dinner table; it just didn’t sit well with me. Then I just relaxed and tried to see it from the view of everyone else who usually watches these shows and then I begun to enjoy it. The movements were so foreign that they begun to make sense. I stopped looking for deep motifs and just enjoyed the way the white was incorporated in each scene.

I LOVED the last dance. I thought the concept was just wonderful. The idea was fun, fresh, funky, cool, and childish. I loved the strawberry and the way it fell with the glitter. The whole scene was bright. From the costumes to the set, to the strawberry to the music, everything was bright. It made me want to go make a tutu and dance around in my room by myself!!!

My First Viewing

I think I am pretty comfortable showing my work today. I worked pretty hard on the three videos and I personally love them. I am so happy with my videos that I do not really think I will take any criticism badly. The videos may not be perfect, they may not be professional quality, but the reason I like them and am so confident in them is because it is the first time I have done something like this. My first videos! How great! I would like to hear what other people say about them, it would be another point of view on the videos that I made.

I would like to hear what people like about the videos and what connected them to the videos. I suppose a risk would be hurt feelings, but hey, like I said, I am so proud of my first videos, that I don't really think one person can bring me down!

I would like to learn how people view my work. I am so familiar with how I view my work, that having a whole new insight would be pretty refreshing. I would like to ask them what really caught their attention. I am sure I can learn from this feedback whether my best work is intentional or non-intentional.

Noun, Verb, Adjective

I had a lot of fears when completing the noun, verb, adjective exercise. I had no idea where to start. I put it off for weeks and continuously tried to find examples on youtube. The idea of doing the first exercise wrong was really nerve-racking. I am not used to doing things wrong, and since this class is fairly artistic, I didnt want to try to defend something as personal as making a video. I was fearful of failing.

I think I would give up being stressed out for a week. I think this will be difficult becuase I have a track record of worriing about things, and beign really scared about not doing well. Things like "what if it is not good enough" runs through my head. I need to really work on the confidence which will stop making me stess out. If I can not stress out for a week, maybe I will see what I am really missing. I can feel less scared all the time and just "do things." Maybe Ill find out that doing things is better than worring and then doing things. Hopefully this will be an eye opening expereince.

My Daily "Rituals"

At school, I tend to not have many “standard rituals.” It is kind of a free for all. For the most part anyways. Some things i do do every day though is wake up late, call my boyfriend, do my readings, talk to my girlfriends, and make plans for the weekend.

I ALWAYS wake up late. it is kind of an unwanted ritual, but it happens anyways. I just cannot seem to get up on time let alone early. I will hit my alarm clock about 8 times before anyone can even think about getting me out of bed. I always say “two more minutes.” I think this is becuase I am overconfident in how fast I can get ready. Inevitably, I forgot to pack something the night before, or I didnt lay the right pants out or….blah blah blah! I dont think I will ever change this ritual.

I tend to call my boyfriend a lot throughout the day. This helps me calm down any nerves by hearing a familiar voice. I also like telling him things, random things, that happen to me. I like sharing with him, it is what keeps us close. However, I have tried to monitor the number of times we talk a day. I realized it can get pretty unerving when I call him and nothing significant has happened within the 2 hours we last spoke, and we just repeat the same conversation we had before. It tends to be a lot of “i love you, i miss you, when can i see you’s” and i dont ever want to use those words as fillers. So i am changing this ritual somewhat.

I do my readings on time. This is for my sanity. period. I do not think I will change this.

I talk to my girlfriends. Becuase we all live in a one big house, its so fun screaming across the hallway and having a full conversation. We all keep our doors open, and its a way to keep our sanity. None of us have the same major, so its a very nice getaway to speak with good friends who dont only talk about all 5 classes we JUST had together like the rest of my friends!! I wont change this ritual cuz its fun and I love my girlfriends.

I make plans for the weekend during the begining of the week becuase it keeps me going and gives me somethign to look forward to. I am sure I will change this ritual as my life becomes more hectic. Last semester, for instance, I did not go out nearly at all. this semester, i make it a point to make plans so I can keep myself going for the week!

Listening in class, I realized i had more "rituals" than i thought: praying, not using my desk, homework on my bed, checking if everything is off, i watch disney channel or john and kate plus 8 before i go to bed.

How I see the world

How I see the world. That is a fairly deep question. I believe I see the world depending on what my mood is. I have semesters where I am on top of the world in academics and leadership. These semesters I see the world as my playground. Nothing is impossible and everything is in my reach. I have all the contacts at my disposal and I tend to succeed. Nothing takes too much thought, I just exude confidence and happiness. This is my bios. Things just happen, without analyzing, I just do, I just succeed, I just am.

Then there are the semesters where I am not doing so well, (meaning I am getting B's) and I feel like everything is a struggle or at least everything takes work and effort. From my boyfriend to my accounting classes, to my girlfriends and finding time to just have fun, everything takes thought and analyzing. In the words of Tharp, this would be my zoe. Things need to be anaylized just to stay on tasks. At this point in my view on the world, my room and planners are filled with sticky notes galore.

I would just like to say this reading just hit me know. I do not feel so psychotic now when I bounce between different views of the world. Ha, in fact, there is documentation of people doing the same. Maybe I am more normal than I thought haha.

Creative DNA by Twyla Tharp

I thought this reading was though provoking, as was the last reading by her. I chose 5 questions of hers and answered them:

1. The first creative moment I remember feeling was when I was very young. I was making a fort in my living room in my old house. This fort was different. It was larger than usual and had many rooms in it. I brought in a lot of different cushions and blankets. It was almost like a little home.

2. I distinctly remember my Dad admiring the fort and the many rooms I divided it into. I think he may even have poked his head into it to see if he could get in, but clearly he was too big! I am pretty sure my Mom also admired it. They were both very proud of me.

8. My creative ambition is to get out of my own way and create something that just flows and is not forced. I am still searching for a way to bring what is inside, out.

9. I am the only obstacle. I am too afraid to fail, especially in such an abstract way, that I rarely let myself start.

20. My Mother regularly inspires me. From a young age, she knew she would be successful, not in terms of necessarily only money, but in terms of happiness. She achieved it, but the way she achieved it was what inspires me. She did not make a strict plan, she did not search out for certain things or people, she just had her convictions and she made it happen. I love her for that.

5 websites to manuever

http://www.foodnetwork.com/.....

well i love food and when i want to find out how to cook something, i just go onto foodnetwork.com. this website is fantastic because i can search in so many different ways. for example, i can search by meal type, main ingredient, and how long i want to cook in. the shows are easily accesible and i can easily search them to find a dish that was highlighted on the show!

http://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox....

this website is fantastic. i love the way i can design my page to look like whatever i want. the left side of the page is great. my inbox, sent mail, trash, its all there. I can ever color code my mail! labels really help out this website, its easier to see in blocks and thats the way that i see! then there are so many great options to add to your page.

http://www.people.com/people/

people's website starts off by giving the user what he wants, pitures and breaking news of celebrities. right on the top, i can chose whether i want home page, news, photos, style, red carpet...its broken up into general catagories so i can begin my celebrity gossip search easily.

http://www.facebook.com

i like this website because the top of the page helps me navigate to page easily. if i hit the homepage button, a plethora of news feed comes up, allowing me to check up on how my friends are doing. on the main page, pictures are displayed on top, and a button to send a message to them. the area to post (one of the main things on facebook) is right on the top middle of the page. everything i need to do on facebook is guided by easily accesible pages.
